Thread: SuSE Linux problems with Sound card

  1. SuSE Linux problems with Sound card

I have installed SuSE 9 on an old HP box. I can't get the sound card
to work. It is an analog devices card and I have an entry in dmesg
    which reads

    isapnp: card Analog Devices AD1816a.

When I use the YaST and look under hardward there is an entry for
    sound as "Analog Devices"

when I try to record I get the message "Direct access to sound card
not possible. no soundcard available or sound support not configured"

I hunted around on the SUSE help webpage and came across an article on
    configuring isapnp.
    http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/1998/06/rb_isapnp.html

Anyway I tried to follow the instructions but I got a problem with
    conflicts on the interrupt.
My current proc/interrupts has an entry for this card that reads
    5: 4085592 XT-PIC AD1816A

    Document also said that ...
"Thus, the next logical step after installing /etc/isapnp.conf is the
configuration, compilation and installation of the driver modules for
    the ISA-PnP cards. "

I have very little idea how to go about this (I am fairly new to
Linux). If anyone has undertaken this and has better instructions I'd
    be very grateful.

    Thanks

You can check what driver modules are loaded with lsmod. Try it and post
    the list.

Also try 'ls -al /dev/snd' or 'ls -al /dev/sound" (depending on your
    system) and post the output.

    What do Software Patents do?
In its current form, they protect only companies with

thanks Ben. In the meantime I tried to install ALSA drivers on my
machine but got nowhere because the install script couldn't find gcc,
cc and cl. Anyway here goes..

After a brief look that seems to be okay.

I take it you can play audio okay? And your username is anandm?

What are you trying to record with? Where do you get the error (as a
    pop-up, in /var/log/, etc...)?

Make sure your mixer levels are all alright.

    What do Software Patents do?
In its current form, they protect only companies with
    big legal departments as they:
a.) Patent everything no matter how general
b.) Sue everybody. Even if the patent can be argued
invalid, small companies can ill-afford the
typical $500k cost of a law-suit (not to mention
    years of harassment).

Don't let them take away your right to program

Thanks Ben. Yes anandm is the username. I should take a step back
here! I started off with a problem playing back. I could get no
sound thru my speakers. So I just tried the recorder and that is when
I got the error message I wrote about.

I did some research in the meantime and ran alsaconf from the command
line and that seemed to do something positive!

After alsaconf did its thing, I tried the recording (Alt F1,
Multimedia, Recording, KRecord) and since the error message didn't
appear. So I tried the play back again before attempting any actual
recording. I still got no sound from the headphone jack but I also
have an audio out jack thru which I got a sound output albeit very
    weak.

I used the mixer (Multimedia, Volume Control, Alsa Mix) and maxed both
my master and PCM volume. Still very feeble.

So that is really where I am at. I am not too concerned about
recording now, but would really like to get a decent output sound
    quality.

Should I go and buy another card?

    Regards

  6. Re: SuSE Linux problems with Sound card

Anyway to get closure on this thing- I did go out and get a new sound
card. It seems to work better than the one I had, this one is a PCI
card. The volume is still not as high as I would have wished, but
enough to hear when I am working at the PC.
    Thanks Ben
