Thread: No Examples in MAN Pages!!!

  1. No Examples in MAN Pages!!!

Coming from the HP-UX world I'm used to calling up a man page and
quickly scrolling down to the numerous examples to refresh my memory,
or when I need to do something quick. Don't have time to go into
cranial meltdown reading 15 or so switches.

In Linux, good luck -- no examples, and you guys call this a great OS?
I'm going back to HP-UX ... see ya never.

    Dom.

Real computer scientists don't comment their code. The
identifiers are so long they can't afford the disk space.

The OP has a very reasonable complaint. He just didn't phrase it politely :-)

HP-UX may be a bit old (but it still works fine) however, the man pages far
exceed anything else I've seen. The have plenty of examples, are written
by professionals and a lot more info than are in GNUs man pages. (Don't get
me going on GNU's damn "info". Why Stallman had to "fix" something that wasn't
    broken is beyond me)

It would be nice if HP would conribute their man pages to GNU.

    /dan

I must say I agree with you. I find the GNU man pages to be a deplorable
departure from what I've been used to for the past 13 years in several UNIX
    variants.

    "info" is a navigationally-convoluted mess.

.... the intent of my response was to hopefully subvert
any useless responses to this useless thread

info sucks. What a way for a noob to try to learn about
GNU/Linux. And the number of man pages that reference the
info page for the up-to-date command usage is really
frustrating. Which leads me to a question. Is there a
    texinfo-man conversion tool? Or a texinfo-HTML conversion
tool? Anybody interested in writing one?

All GNU/Linux docs should be in HTML AND man. HTML for
those afraid of a command line.

Man isn't hypertexty, and HTML had not yet been invented.

    You are looking for texi2html.
