Thread: RH9 + kernel 2.6.0-11 + SB16 = no sound!?

  1. RH9 + kernel 2.6.0-11 + SB16 = no sound!?

    Hi,

I have RH9 and kernel 2.6.0-test11 and everything works but my
    sound card SB 16.

I compiled kernel with ALSA support and OSS API support. I loaded all
    modules:

    snd_pcm_oss 55684 0
    snd_mixer_oss 21568 1 snd_pcm_oss
    snd_emu10k1 98692 1 snd_emu10k1_synth
    snd_rawmidi 27328 2 snd_seq_virmidi,snd_emu10k1
    snd_pcm 102592 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_emu10k1
    snd_timer 28160 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
    snd_seq_device 10500 5
    snd_emu10k1_synth,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq,snd_emu10 k1,snd_rawmidi
    snd_ac97_codec 56516 1 snd_emu10k1
    snd_page_alloc 13956 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
    snd_util_mem 6656 2 snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1
    snd_hwdep 11776 1 snd_emu10k1
    snd 53636 14
    snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_midi_event, snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_emu10k1,snd_ rawmidi,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_seq_device,snd_ac97_ codec,snd_util_mem,snd_hwdep
    audio 51392 0
    snd_emu10k1_synth 9792 0
    snd_emux_synth 39744 1 snd_emu10k1_synth
    snd_seq_virmidi 9600 1 snd_emux_synth
    snd_seq_midi_event 9792 1 snd_seq_virmidi
    snd_seq_midi_emul 10048 1 snd_emux_synth
    snd_seq 60976 4
    snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_midi_event, snd_seq_midi_emul

but if I play any sound, nothing comes out. No error message.
I can "cat xxx >> /dev/dsp" - no error, no sound. xmms plays all
songs with 10x speed, but no sound comes out.

With kernel 2.4.20 everything worked fine. Anything I forgot?

    Thanks for any tip!

    Michael

The default ALSA sound volume is MUTE! Use the alsa mixer to unmute the
audio device and then turn up the volume.

  3. Re: RH9 + kernel 2.6.0-11 + SB16 = no sound!?

Thanks, Jerry. But I'm still not quite there.

I started the mixer and found that it has only one microphone. That must
be the one in my USB cam - so I guess it was /dev/dsp1 instead of
/dev/dsp[0]. So I removed that module (rmmod audio), and now NOTHING
works: neither mixer nor sound: device not found. Like on 2.4.20, my
/dev/dsp was a char device for (major/minor) 14/3. Is that still there?
    or somewhere
    else? I tried 116/3, 116/0 and 12/3 (because cat /dev/devices says:
    Character devices:
    [shorted]
    14 sound
    {...}
    116 alsa

    and "cat /proc/asound/devices"

    I appreciate any help!!

    unmuting the mixer, perhaps?

Earlier I was having problems with xmms playing songs at 10x speed. I
tried running xmms from a root terminal and it works fine now. BTW -
    I'm also running RH9.
