Thread: Installation Issues

  1. Installation Issues

Have a portable that has XP loaded. I want to create a dual boot with
    Linux.
Can I create the dual boot without partitioning the existing drive?
If I have to partition, what could I use that would not destroy my
    existing XP files?
What should I use to create the dual boot?

    TIA

There used to be a "UMSDOS" file system - Slackware had support for
this, but it's rarely used anymore. The problem is that the standard
microsoft file systems are all single user mode, and lack the concepts
of file ownership, directory and file permissions, and file links. The
bottom line is yes, you'll have to partition.

The popular Linux distributions come with the necessary tools. There is
also a commercial product called "Partition Magic".

Again, the Linux distribution will come with versatile boot loaders.
Commonly, this is now "LILO" (LInux LOader) and "GRUB" (GRand Unified
    Bootloader).
