I'm in the US but prefer the d/m/y format.

If you would like for the command `date` to return d/m/y, use

    date +%d%m%Y

I use KDE on all of my machines and have the date set to d/m/y format.
    Right click on the clock.
    Date & Time Format

Set your locale to UK. It should set things like a proper GBP sign
instead of the US dollar sign, d/m/y dates and 24 hour times.
