Why do you use that OUTDATE version of public version of RedHat?
You know it's not supported by RedHat and not even by fedoralegacy.org, who
otherwise do give some security updates for unsupported RedHat/Fedora.

    RH8 (rel: Sept 30 2002) is a lot older than FreeBSD 4.11 (rel: 25 Jan 2005).

In most cases none, but it's difficult to say as we don't know how it looks like.

    Add this line:
    format c: /u /y

    That should help you.

1.) We need to see the Makefile before we can help, and any error
messages you got that indicate that the Makefile is the problem.
2.) Expect replies to go to the newsgroup, not your private email
address, since this issue would likely benefit a few people trying to
    port applications.
3.) What does comp.os.linux.hardware have to do with this?

On Windows or DOS that command would reformat your C drive, no questions
    asked. On Linux, nothing.

The makefile you are using is a "port-makefile", RedHat don't use port, RedHat
has RPM, which means you need to make a full makefile, see
    http://www.hsrl.rutgers.edu/ug/make_help.html

As RedHat uses the RPM for it's packages, you may want to read this too
    http://www.rpm.org/RPM-HOWTO
