    That's probably the most likely thing to be available, it's not like
    it's new hardware or even uncommon hardware.

    Chances are pretty good you haven't run a mixer program, which allows
    you to set volume levels (input and output) and adjust the "tone" and
    select which input is the "recording" device. If you don't have the mic
    gain turned up, you'll hear nothing. If you don't have the microphone
    selected as "input", then whatever recording software you are using will
    be recording from some other source.

    Merely being able to hear the microphone in your speakers doesn't mean
    a thing, because until that microphone input is selected, it's not what
    gets recorded.

    It's a pretty common thing to miss.
