  1. Intermittent DVD-RAM drive failure, "cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appearsconfused"

    Hi:

I have two DVD-RAM drives, Panasonic SW-9573 which was in use in a Suse
9.3 machine for years, and a new SW-9576 drive which is being used in a
new openSuSE 10.3 machine, with Linux 2.6.22.18. My mobo is a Gigabyte
GA-EP35-DS3R with the crappy Jmicron controller. Here's some dmesg output:

    to recover by ending request.

The /var/log/messages shows the last message about every 15 minutes.
The drive works most of the time, but intermittently fails. When it
    fails the messages look like:

    DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

Drive was unuseable after this until reboot.

I have tried the older SW-9573 in the new machine. It also generates
the "cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused..." errors, but since
I've only tried it for a few hours, I have yet to see it blow up like
the old drive does. Indications are that the problem is in the hardware
or Linux kernel because there are no such errors at all in the
/var/log/messages of the old machine which used the SW-9573, where the
    drive never failed.

I've also tried switching BIOS settings between IDE and AHCI mode.
Though I suppose the AHCI doesn't mean anything to the PATA part of the
interface anyway. The Jmicron chip on this mobo is connected to two
    SATA and one IDE connector.

There is little I can do about the kernel without a major headache so
I'd like to find a solution that doesn't involve recompiling.

The other possibility is that a ATA controller card might work, by
    bypassing the Jmicron controller.

Hmm, this site indicates that the Jmicron device is "open". Yet it
appears to have issues nonetheless with my hardware:

    http://linux-ata.org/driver-status.html

I will try a PCI ATA controller card first since it is cheap.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for input.

I just installed FC9 on a new computer, with an ASUS P5N-E SLI. I loaded
a kernel update (2.6.25.11-97), and started getting weird messages in the
    syslog...
    Aug 5 22:12:29 kernel: ata5.00: status: { DRDY }
Aug 5 22:12:29 kernel: ata5: soft resetting link
    Aug 5 22:12:30 kernel: ata5.00: configured for UDMA/33
    Aug 5 22:12:30 kernel: ata5: EH complete
    Aug 5 22:12:37 kernel: ata5.00: limiting speed to UDMA/25:PIO4
    Aug 5 22:12:37 kernel: ata5.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0
    action 0x2 frozen

I then loaded 2.6.25-14 and they went away... go figure. YMMV

I put in a 3rd party PCI IDE interface board from NewEgg with a SI
chipset. No more problems with the piece of crap Jmicron controller!
