FreeBSD CURRENT has a different approach to wireless cards. Somewhere
in /etc/rc.conf you need lines like
wlans_iwi0="wlan0"
and then all future ifconfig command should refer to wlan0 instead of iwi0.

I am not sure if this will fix your problem or not, but you must have
not done this somewhere, otherwise ifconfig would have listed wlan0 as
well as iwi0.

If you are new to FreeBSD, you might prefer to use FreeBSD-STABLE
instead. I think iwi is already a part of that.
