  1. alphaserver and windows

This is my first post to comp.sys.dec.

We have two alphaservers (2002EA and DS26), we need to install windows
NT on one server, and windows 2000 / 2003 on the other. Do these
servers support windows operating system? Are there any firmware
upgrades require to do these installations?!

    Thanks in advance.

There is a version of NT4 for Alpha, although you wont get it past Service
    Pack 2.

Windows 2000/2003 are x86 only, and wont install on Alpha.

Not entirely true. There is a version of Windows 2000 (an early release
candidate... i believe RC2) that still supported Alpha. But try service
    packing it.

    Welcome

    >We have two alphaservers (2002EA and DS26),

Are these your nodenames or DEC/CPQ/HPQ model numbers?
I'm not aware of such model names/numbers for Alpha servers/workstation...

You can find more info at http://www.compaq.com/alphaserver/
    (eg. you see a DS25 or a 2000 or 2100 there, but no DS26 or 2002)

    Would you please recheck?

F/W Upgrades for Alpha Systems are at

    http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/

But as there are no such M$ crap for Alphas (anymore - W2K RC2 was the last)
this is moot. If your systems are really Alpha Systems, better upgrade them
to OpenVMS (http://www.openvms.digital.com/) and then yes, a F/W upgrade
    might be indicated...

The better question is: Does Windows support these machines? The answer is, no -
Windows for Alpha is no more. Linux and BSD are available, however.

Windows does provide 64-bit versions for Itanic(Itanium - HP Integrity servers)
and may be beginning to support EM64T. Check the Micro$lop website.

    Sir:

Windoze NT for Alpha is relatively simple to find. It's on most all
    Windoze NT install CDRoms.
Winzode 2000 Server for Alpha is *MUCH* harder to locate as it was never
officially released as a commercial product. It was distributed to a
select few as a "Beta Test" release. There were "disagreements" between
Micro$oft and Intel at that time about supporting the Alpha product line
and Intel won. The project was terminated before the product made it to
    market.

I don't recognize either of your AlphaServers, please double check your
    information on model numbers.

If neither machine has AlphaBios, then neither will support Windoze
    products.

If you require assistance in locating Win2k Server for Alpha I might be
    in a position to assist.
