Headless VAXstation
I have a VAXstation 3100 M38. I also have a VT220 (with keyboard!), but no
monitor. I will access the machine using Telnet (and DECWindows when I work
out how to do it) from my PC, so I don't want to leave the VT220 powered on
just to keep the VAXstation up and running, I want to avoid using power and
avoid screen burn. Is there a way to make the VAXstation headless?
Thanks

Set the dip switch to run with a serial console.
Just turn off the VT220 when you're not using it or use a serial cable
from the PC to the VaxStation. The VaxStation will still run.

Unfortunately I think I am already doing this. I have the S3 Alternate
Console switch in the UP position and the VT200 connected to the printer
port. After I have booted the box, if I switch the VT220 off it halts the
system. Is there something wrong with what I am doing?
Thanks

Likely. Obviously the turnoff (or later the power-on selftest) sends a BREAK
signal which means "enter console mode" (with the dead sergeant prompt ">>>")
while other VAXes have ^P for this.
Try to disconnect the VT200 datacable before turning off (but I'm afraid
this won't help either - maybe a very slow voltage drop could help ;-)
You can enter ">>> C" (continue) to resume the VAX, but this isn't really
a fix for your problem

Isn't the VT220 power consumption just a fraction of that of the
VAXstation? You can turn down (completely) the brightness to avoid
screen burn.
I've seen some VAXes which could run without a console, but not boot
without a console (whereas, I think, (most?) ALPHAs can). This might be
an issue depending on whether an automatic reboot is needed.

You could try flipping S3 so it uses the graphics console and plugging
the keyboard from your VT220 into the VAXstation.

I did this regularly with my MV3800M38. Just pull out the
terminal plug before switching off the terminal.

I have just tried this and it worked perfectly, thanks very much.

I have tried the other solution posted to this group which worked. For
completeness I will also try this next time I boot the machine.

And the explanation is: BREAK is a serial line condition where the
receive signal is forced low continuously by the remote end, whereas when
left floating the receive signal is pulled high locally.

VT220 should have a built-in screen saver (blanks the screen after 30 minutes);
however, it comes back on when data is received (like OPCOM messages). You could
just turn the brightness way down...
Unfortunately, this is the "normal" behavior. On power down, the terminal sends
a serial "break" which brings the VAX back to the console prompt. I thought
there was a way to disable that, but I don't the manuals for one.
I believe someone here or in comp.os.vms may know how to remove the graphics
from the VAXstation and turn it into a MicroVAX. This may change some license
unit requirements, but that might work in your favor, I think.

IIRC, this request was for a VAXstation 3100. AFAIK, you can NOT turn
this into a MicroVAX. The MicroVAX 3100 is different than the
VAXstation 3100.
What you can do is either have an LK201 connected to the VAXstation 3100
or not. If a keyboard is connected, VMS sees it (and licenses it) as a
VAXstation 3100.
Without a keyboard, VMS sees it as a VAXserver 3100.
For a VAXstation 3100, this is independent of the setting of S3.
One way to keep the machine from going into console mode when the VT220
is powered off is to put a terminal server between the VT220 and the
machine. While this is an extra piece of hardware, if you have multiple
machines it can be very handy.

I tried this today and it worked just fine. The odd thing is that I expected
this to cause me a licensing problem, because I installed VMS when using the
alternate console, which I believe makes it a VAXserver, but set up in this
way I understand makes it a VAXstation. Can anyone suggest why I might not
have licensing issues as a result of this change?
Thanks

VAXserver license unit requirements are higher than for a VAXstation.
"Downgrading" would leave you "over-licensed", not under.

For a 3100, The VAXstation/VAXserver distinction does not depend on the
setting of S3.
If a keyboard is directly connected to the unit, it is a VAXstation
3100. If no keyboard is connected (or if the keyboard is faulty), it is
a VAXserver 3100.
