  1. NETBSD install Alpha PWS

    Hi All

I have a PWS 500a which used to run Redhat 7.2 alpha. I removed this to
play arround with BSD. But when I try to install from the cd or from
the floppies it complains that the path to the kernel is incorrect. It
seems to remember the previous path to the kernel from Redhat. Is there
a way to clear the SRM to allow it to boot off the BSB cds.

    Any help please.

    Spiff

yea... it sounds more like its attempting to boot to a device that has
changed its location/naming. One way to do it:

    boot computer
hit CTRL+C as soon as you see the blue screen with the model no# *you may
have to press it several times
    the type "show |more"
It will show you the boot device, normally on the first page... it maybe
    called boot_dev
Once you have it, press ESC to exit
Back on the boot screen set your boot device "set boot_dev "
    Example: set boot_dev dqa0
If its not called boot_dev, it may be different, it will tell you when you
    go to set it

    That will be 50 ;-)

    Hi Diskman

Yep I tried this but it will not let me change it to DQA0 , it says--
boot_dev protected from attempted operation. Any ideas

    Cheers

    Try BOOTDEF_DEV

  5. Re: NETBSD install Alpha PWS

    Hi All
No luckI changed the boot to DQA0, when it boots from the cd it starts
to bootstrap and after the switch to OSF pal code succeeds, then I get
the following : Boot file: 1/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17-4
    Boot flags: 0
Open 1/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17-4 no such file or directory

    Boot failure : halting......
    CPU 0

This is just to boot from either floppies or from the cdrom - how do I
remove this boot directory so that it will boot from the CD kernel.

    Cheers

  6. Re: NETBSD install Alpha PWS

    Hi All

It did change to DQA0 , thanks Peter, but will still not boot, after
the boot procedure starts and when the OSF PAL code succeeds then this
    comes up :
    Boot file: 1/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17-4
    Boot flags : 0
Open 1/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17-4 no such file or directory
    Boot failed : halting

How can I remove this boot directory to allow it to boot from the CD or
    floppies kernel.

    Thanks chaps

  7. Re: NETBSD install Alpha PWS

    Try this

    >>>set boot_osflags 0
    >>>set boot_file (nothing) then enter

This is telling the system to stop using the desgnated bootfile pointing in
    the SRM

And when your done playing with NetBSD be sure to try the Alpha
version of FreeBSD. I found it to be the best of breed.
