  1. Lenny: GL screensavers are no longer starting after recent update of xserver-xorg-core

    Hello,

after the recent update of xserver-xorg-core to version
2:1.4.1~git20080517-2~lenny1 I got a black screen if I try to start or
configure one of the GL screensavers, regardless if from the KDE
configuration panel or the ScreenSaver Preferences.

KDE just gave a blank screen without error message, ScreenSaver Preferences
report "Not Installed". I could not solve the problem by downgrading to the
previous version of xserver-xorg-core, so take care before you update to
    this version.

Do you have the nVidia or ATI graphics drivers installed? Did your recent
    update also update the kernel?

    Yes, NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05-pkg1.run

Not so far as I can remember, at least not when I update xserver-xorg-core.

I restored the partition from an image and done again all current & offered
updates except xserver-xorg-core, and all works well. But when I upgrade
    xserver-xorg-core from 2:1.4.1~git20080517-1 to
2:1.4.1~git20080517-2~lenny1 I get the problem with GL screensavers.

    Re-install xscreensaver-gl then. I have the same xserver-xorg-core
version and no problems such as you report. But I also use NVIDIA version
    169.12.

Made again a partition image, installed latest xserver-xorg-core and lost
the GL screensavers, then re-installed xscreensaver-gl, but it did not
    help.

Then I installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run (with some warnings) and I
got the GL screensavers back. Then I installed
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05-pkg1.run and still had the GL screensavers.

Restored the partition and performed a "nvidia-installer --sanity",
    reported:

    | -> 'NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86' (version: 173.14.05)
    | appears to be installed correctly.

Then installed the latest xserver-xorg-core and performed again
    a "nvidia-installer --sanity", reported now:

    | WARNING: Your driver installation has been altered since it was initially
    | installed;
    | ERROR: File '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so' is not a symbolic
    | link.

and recommended a new installation of the driver.

Restored the partition again and examined the
folder '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions' before and after installation of
    the drive:

    Before:
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 18856 21. Jun 23:48 libdbe.so
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40962 21. Jun 23:48 libdri.so
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 151329 21. Jun 23:48 libextmod.so
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2426207 21. Jun 23:48 libGLcore.so
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 429042 21. Jun 23:48 libglx.so
    | -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1269664 16. Jun 11:23 libglx.so.173.14.05
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 27893 21. Jun 23:48 librecord.so
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40084 21. Jun 23:48 libxtrap.so

    and after:
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 18856 21. Jun 23:48 libdbe.so
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40962 21. Jun 23:48 libdri.so
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 151329 21. Jun 23:48 libextmod.so
    | lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 25. Jun 08:50 libglx.so -> libglx.so.173.14.05
    | -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1269664 25. Jun 08:50 libglx.so.173.14.05
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 27893 21. Jun 23:48 librecord.so
    | -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40084 21. Jun 23:48 libxtrap.so

So it seems that the xserver-xorg-core installation replaced the symbolic
link libglx.so with a same named file. After re-installed the driver,
libglx.so points again to libglx.so.173.14.05 and GL screensavers working
    again.

I think, a simple creation of the link would solve the problem also instead
of installing the full nVidia driver again. But in my opinion its a fault
of the xserver-xorg-core installation that it touch the libglx.so.

I will extend the bug report of this new experiences so that they can decide
if it is still a bug or not.

The solution is to run once "dpkg-divert --add libglx.so". That instruct
the packagemanagement to leave the ligglx.so untouched and to save the file
of the package with a different filename (in this case libglx.so.dist).

Got again an update of xserver-xorg-core but this time the GL screensavers
were not broken, so the solution works so far.

Bugreport has been closed since it is not a bug in xserver-xorg-core but
more a malfunction of the nNidia installer script.
