System fails to boot with a kernel panic about not being able to find the root
partition and some VHS error (can only tell you what I remember). Previous
kernel is linux-image-2.6.22-3-amd64 (2.6.22-6.lenny1) which works fine. Comp
has SATA HD & DVD, no IDE drives.

This could be related to #473398, but may not be.

If you want more info that's fine, but give me a hint please.

another of this useless reports, you don't even specify error mesage
nor bootlog. i'd be more then happy to get a crystall ball

here you get enough info on what could happen:
    http://wiki.debian.org/InitramfsDebug

please report back based on those steps.
