After the first reboot with 2.6.23, I got a crash but then it worked fine
during most of the day. But just now, I got this strange error again from
    the network interface:

    Dec 7 22:25:21 bora-bora -- MARK --
    Dec 7 22:26:24 bora-bora kernel: tg3: eth0: Link is down.
Dec 7 22:26:24 bora-bora kernel: tg3: eth0: The system may be re-ordering memory-mapped I/O cycles to the network device, attempting to recover. Please report the problem to the driver maintainer and include system chipset information.
    Dec 7 22:26:27 bora-bora kernel: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
Dec 7 22:26:28 bora-bora kernel: tg3: eth0: Link is up at 100 Mbps, full duplex.
Dec 7 22:26:28 bora-bora kernel: tg3: eth0: Flow control is on for TX and on for RX.
    Dec 7 22:26:28 bora-bora kernel: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready
    [...]

So 2.6.23 seems to work better than 2.6.22-3, but it still produces this
strange error that I did not experience before with 2.6.22-2 or earlier
    kernels.

Yes, the memory is fine. But see below...

After several more days of testing, the crashes or sudden freezes became
more frequent with 2.6.22-3 or 2.6.23. And then I tried again with 2.6.22-2
and I managed to get the same problem. I found that if I pushed a bit on the
side of the keyboard or if I attempted to move the laptop slightly while it
was in its docking station, then I could get a crash most of the time.

Conclusion: this is not a kernel problem. This is a hardware problem and it
was apparently a pure coincidence that it occurred first just after upgrading
my kernel. It was also just pure luck that it did not occur again while I
reverted to the older version, but it came back when I tried another time with
the newer kernels (2.6.22-3 or 2.6.23). I suspect that the hardware became
sentient and was actively trying to confuse me. But now that I found a way
to reproduce the problem at will with a light twist of the laptop's frame, I
know that the hardware is the culprit.

I think that you can close this bug report because it was not Debian's fault
and it is unlikely that others will be affected by the same problem. I will
get a replacement laptop in a few days and get rid of the current one that
had served me faithfully during the last three years (until last week).

But just in case someone would still look at this bug report, here is another
example of scary messages that I got while the machine was misbehaving. I am
including this just for the entertainment value. Note hat the timestamps are
unreliable because when this problem occurs, it looks like the whole CPU is
locked for a while and this resulted in the clock being off by several
minutes at the end of the test.
