KOffice 1.4.2 available
Hi, people.
I've just uploaded KOffice 1.4.2 to Sid , as it contains a new binary package
(krita), it will get stuck in NEW for some time. In the meanwhile you can
download it from:
deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/koffice-1.4.2/ ./
It has just been handed by the previous maintainer (Ben Burton) to the Debian
Qt/KDE team. As this has been my first day with koffice it's quite probable
that the uploaded packages feature some problems. Testing is welcome
Best regards

James Spencer has just reported the first bug, I moved a file from kpresenter
to koffice-libs but forgot to add a Replaces:, I'll fix it soon and also will
enable openexr support in krita.
Best regards

Cool, but when do we see it in Unstable?

I've already uploaded a new version (both to unstable and pkg-kde.alioth)
fixing the Replaces: thing, the openexr support is only present in current
krita from SVN, so we'll have to wait for that

Many thanks for that !
Could you also put a Sources.gz so we can apt get source to recompile it on
sarge ;-)

Just wondering, how many painting applications does this make in all of kde?
Is there such a thing as too many painting applications in one desktop
environment? Would it be possible for people to decide on perhaps just a
couple and then develop only those..
Being a bit tungue in cheek here..
Seems like every new kde version lately
has brought us a new painting app.

What are the others? The only painting apps that I found worthwhile to install
so far was The Gimp and kiconedit.

Re: KOffice 1.4.2 available
Off the top of my head, there is kiconedit, for editing icons, kolourpaint,
as a simple paint program, and krita (now) as a fully featured raster image
editor... Each a different tool for a different thing... Sheesh, I don't
know what people's problems are with having different tools for different
jobs...

That was already named by me and it's the only one I know that can also create
MS Windows icons easily.

Please define the purpose of a "simple paint program" when you can have
full-featured one?

Actually there are only kolourpaint and kiconedit in kdegraphics. Now, I
will let kiconedit pass because it is rather specialised. But do we
really need both kolourpaint and krita? If it was like juk and amarok
where there is a kind of healthy competition, then that would be good,
but in this case it seems it's just wasted resources trying to reinvent
the wheel.
Same goes for kview and kuickshow IMHO..

I think there is only kolourpaint and krita for KDE. Kolourpaint is a
lightwight, easy-to-use painting program, while krita is a feature-rich
painting and image editing application like gimp or Corel painter. These two
applications are not really made for the same users.

It might be more complex to work with a "full featured" program if you only
need a small job to do.
Like a lot of developers dislike using an IDE if they are just writing a short
script or simple tool.
Or people using separate programs for mails, news and orgnaizer instead of
"full featured" PIM suites.

Also tongue in cheek, but it seems like painting apps are the same as
media apps - everybody thinks they can write one better than all the rest,
and everybody gives up sometime around the point that they hack their
favourite feature into an otherwise awkward and incomplete program ...

Not everybody. Sometimes you get something like Amarok ...

Amarok is a good player. It crashes a lot for me though. Especially when I
forward the UI via ssh.
