Thread: Xwindows doesn't start on new install

  1. Xwindows doesn't start on new install

I have installed Debian Etch on a Dell Mobile Precision M50, but
    xwindows fails to start.
    I get messages saying:

Failed to load module "kbd". Module does not exist
Failed to load module "mouse". Module does not exist
    No devices detected.
    Fatal Server Error
    No screens found.

Looking around on the internets, I saw something about the problem being
that a generic mouse was defined in the ServerLayout section of
xorg.conf. I removed this line, but no change.

What else is could be the problem?

    Hello!

As the other reply told you, you should first post the outputs.
Anyway, in my first debian installation in my laptop some months ago I
had problem with the mouse and X server didn't start. I don't remember
exactly what I did, but my lines about keyboard and mouse in xorg.conf
    are this way:

    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Keyboard0"
    Driver "kbd"
    EndSection

    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Mouse0"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
    Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
    EndSection

    Greetings!

  4. The same problem to me !!!

I met the same problem through netinstall.
I'll try to make an installation from CD/DVD, not a network installation.
    We'll see.

    Hi!

I never had a problem with the latest release of netinstall. In fact, I love it!

  7. Eight hours between two installations !!!!!

It's my first time that I had this problem. It happened few hours after a successful net-installation to my laptop. I never before had something like this.
    I'll try again tonight.

PS I'm very sorry for my English.

You're missing xorg's input devices - without the keyboard, no
    console, no screens found -

    apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-all

will do the trick, but it's a little overkill. You can weed the
drivers later to what you really need, after you get the gui in hand -
it's easier that way. Sometimes this happens as the system meta
packages are being updated upstream, no problem, a little patience is
warranted as the guys are banging the lid down on Etch at the moment.

    Ciao,

    Dave

Hmm. Got a mouse and keyboard, agp is seen, nvidia driver is loaded, but
can't see the card. May be a problem with proprietary chip here (and I
could be wrong, too), but try using vesa as the card driver in your
xorg.conf. If that works, you may have to look into special settings
for the xorg driver or compiling the proprietary driver.

The other place we could be wrong is in the bus identifier parameter,
but that appears correct to me.

    ciao,

    Dave

I'm not certain how to change the driver to vesa.
    In this section:

    Section "Device"
    Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV17GL [Quadro4 500 GoGL]"
    Driver "ivtvdev"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection

    i change "ivtvdev" to "vesa"
    No effect.

Is this what you meant to do?

Agreed. you can take a look at what modules are available for that stock
    kernel by typing:

    modconf

it will give you a menu of modules you can insert or remove with the
menu. nifty little program. if you don't have it:

    apt-get modconf

it's possible that the xorg userland driver doesn't know how to insert
your kernel module. modconf not only inserts a module, but also makes
an entry in the file /etc/modules so the module you need is inserted
    every time you boot.

Oh, and that was indeed what I meant about changing the driver to VESA.

    Ciao,

    Dave

normal nv is the small nvidia driver. and the package is:
    xserver-xorg-video-nv

there are two drivers on linux

    - framebuffer driver of the kernel
    - x driver for X

the first isn't necassary at all, for the x driver you only need the "nv"
above. NOTE: the nv driver does not support 3D, if you want 3D and advanced
power management you have to install the nvidia driver from nvidia.com.

if you choose to install the driver from nvidia.com get the "package"
and install the kernel source, configure the kernel source, and then do a (as
    root)

    sh ./NVIDIA-....

normally after that if the kernel source is correctly found, and its
correctly configured it will just work.

to install the source .. and configure it...

    apt-get install linux-source-
    cd /usr/src/
tar jxf (or a "tar zxf ...)
    cd linux ...
    cp /boot/config- .config
    make prepare

  15. Re: Xwindows doesn't start on new install

Another thing to keep in mind is recent troubles we've seen during
installs with Xorg when the user selects repositories from contrib and
non-free during the repository selection phase of the install.

My laptop intel i910 adapter was incorrectly identified as radeon card,
and fglrx was installed instead of the proper stuff alldue to my being a
    little overeager at the start.

    food for thought...

  16. Re: Xwindows doesn't start on new install

    modconf shows:
    kernel/drivers/video/nvidia
so i tried that, but no joy.
I've now tried vesa, nv, and nvidia with no effect.

    I then tried:
    apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nv
    but no effect

Then, in modconf, i saw this:
    kernel/drivers/video/nvidia

so I selected in for install.
This had an effect but not a desirable one.
Xwindows doesn't come up, but the screen size in the terminal is now
larger than the screen such that I can't see what I am typing.
I may have to start over with debian

  17. probably a general problem concerning latest X-Version

Within the last months I could install several different etch-Versions
(beta, RC1) on both a desktop system based on Gigabyte's GA-M55plus-S3G
(grapics: nvidia GeForce 6100) and an Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro 2055
(graphics VIA UniChrome) without any problems concerning X. This means,
the installer chose, lacking a special driver for the graphics, the vesa
driver, enabling me to install the proprietary nvidia driver and the one
from openchrome.org in a second step - all without any problems.

Since a couple of days I also get the message about the missing kbd and
mouse modules - on both machines, and using exactly the same old RC1
installation media. Furthermore, the debian installer installs only the
fglrx (!) driver. The problem also appears the same way using weekly
snapshot and daily build of 2007/01/06.

    Solution:
    Manually install xserver-xorg-input-kbd/mouse, xserver-xorg-video-vesa
(the lack of this module after the normal installation is the reason why
just entering the module within xorg.conf doesn't work).
Run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, chose the manual recognition of the
graphics card and thus urge X to use the vesa driver.
Then, in a second step the appropriate driver can be installed.

at jdaues: on the Gigabyte system, everything worked fine using the
proprietary driver from nvidia.com. I first had to install
linux-source-2.6.x (there's only one package fiting this scheme
    available), linux-headers-, pkg-config, x-dev. The
installation had to be done from a text-console with no X running (which
can be achieved easily using kdm, not using gdm, as far as I know).

at sdpatt: I actually think that this is a bug that ought to be
reported, isn't it? I'm just not sure about how because it's not obvious
to me which packet(s) are concerned ...

Umm, xserver-xorg-video-nv provides the nv driver, so you will have to
'apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nv' *before* trying the nv driver in
    your xorg.conf.

xserver-xorg-video-vesa provides the vesa driver, so you will have to
'apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nv' *before* trying the vesa driver
    in your xorg.conf.

The nvidia driver is a different "kettle of fish"
It involves installing the 'nvidia-kernel-source' and 'module-assistant'
packages then (while still on the net):

    m-a -t prepare nvidia
    m-a -t build nvidia
    m-a -t install nvidia

    then

modprobe nvidia (although this now may be automatic - but it won't hurt)

THEN try nvidia in your xorg.conf.

Post back if you need more help. - You should not need to reinstall.

    See: http://home.comcast.net/~andrex/Debi...tallation.html
    Hopefully its still relevant

Same thing here - and I did see that original response.

I must say the original post in this thread was much more useful.
After all, it seemed a bit obvious that to say that it 'was broken
    and *should* be fixed soon'.

As it wasn't, a report of a workaround was much more useful to someone
doing an install right now - so thank you Peter...
