I can not compile kernel 2.6.16 on my toshiba laptop - Debian

This is a discussion on I can not compile kernel 2.6.16 on my toshiba laptop - Debian ; I would like upgrade my kernel 2.4.32 on my toshiba laptop A80.I have tried it several times and I didnīt get it. I watched tutorials in linux on laptop page and I seek iformation on google but always the same ...

  1. I can not compile kernel 2.6.16 on my toshiba laptop

    I would like upgrade my kernel 2.4.32 on my toshiba laptop A80.I have tried
    it several times and I didnīt get it. I watched tutorials in linux on
    laptop page and I seek iformation on google but always the same kernel
    panic:

    modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting ext3
    (/lib/modules/2.6.8/kernel/fs/ext3/ext3.ko): Invalid module format

    pivot_root: No such file or directory
    /sbin/init: 432: cannot open dev/console: No such file
    Kernel panic

    Somebody can help me?

    Thanks in advance but I need a sol soon because It drives me crazy

    I am making it manually.I don not remeber if I upgraded the
    module-init-tools. How I can know if it is upgrade?And How I can install? by
    apt???

    If I rembember if you upgrade to 2.6 kernel images, apt will be
    upgrade module-init-tools too.
    If donīt, you can try to do it manually.

    cd /usr/src/kernel...
    make menuconfig
    make modules_install
    make install
    mkinitrd /boot/kernel-2.6.26 2.6.26

    nano /boot/gurb/menu.lst
    Here upgrade the data qith the actually
    reboot

    I choos the new kernel and kernel panic

    I get source tarball and uncompressed it. Yes it is 2.56.16
