    2. If i try to startx , the system takes a very long time - 1 or 2 minutes
    to process with the message

    the screen goes blank for a while and sometime x will start but just cut
    off after a while. sometimes it does not start at all.

    It looks like you are running a new enough version
    of xorg.

    Have you tried removing the xorg.conf file?

    Move it to something like xorg.conf.backup
    and see what happens.

    Another line of attack is to add more modes&depths
    to the Screen sexion, or comment the modes.
