xorg.conf - BSD

  1. xorg.conf

    AFAICT, there is no xorg.conf file included in the 4.2 distribution
    of OpenBSD. This is a problem since the builtin xorg.conf does not
    work with my new ACER lcd monitor with 1440x900 resolution (eg startx
    and xinit both fail to initialize Xwindows).

    Was the omission of even sample versions of xorg.conf which would
    ease the creation of customized xorg.conf files deliberate?

    If you want a very good sample xorg.conf then, as root:

    # X -configure

    I've tried that twice but it didn't work.

    ksh: exit: -c: unknown option

    It's case sensitive and you don't type the #, right?

    That's correct. I used bvi to look for 'configure' in the executeable.
    I found it and also saw other options (-probe, etc).
    I get the same error for X -probe and any other option I tried.

    Most probably yes. X comes with 2 tools that spew xorg.conf files.
    Between that and xorg.conf(5) you should not need samples.

    Xorg, in most setup, can query the monitor/video card capabilities and
    run without a configuration file. Obviously not your case.

    You have read /usr/X11R6/README?

    What you describe worked with my 10-year-old Dell monitor (2048x1546)
    which I have just replaced because of aging of both the monitor and
    my eyeballs. But 4.2 xinit and startx don't work with the new Acer
    1440x900 monitor that I just bought. I've been using it in console mode.

    When I attempted to run X -config, the monitor
    puts up the message "unsupported input".

    I copied the file xorg.conf.new to /etc/xorg.conf as root and
    then tried running xinit as user. I got the "input not supported"
    message on the acer monitor. Here is the /var/log file:

    I changed nothing.

    But X and Xorg do not act the same for whatever reason.

    Actually, what changed is that I had defined an alias for X which superceded
    the X -> Xorg. I just didn't think of it until this moment.

    What does the error message in the Xinit startup log about failure to acquire
    AGPGARTH ("inapropriate ioctl") mean? Should I just go out and buy another
    monitor?

    AGPGART has to do with X interfacing with the video card, not the
    video card interfacing with the monitor.

    OK. It looks like the X problems I am having with 4.2 are due to the Acer
    monitor. 4.2 X works with the old Dell monitor even using the xorg.conf
    that Xorg generated for the Acer. But the Acer doesn't work with its generated
    xorg.conf. I am getting quite comfortable working in text mode although I
    miss the shaved beaver at orlingrabbe.com which seems to have turned recently
    into a real porno den.

    (If it were with the monitor, then replacing it might fix the
    problem. But you write that a new monitor will not help. Just
    making sure I understand you correctly :-) )

    So there is now a problem with the 4.2 software in correctly interfacing
    to the video card which worked fine with OpenBSD versions < 4.2?

    OK. No problem with the 4.2 software. Just change the driver designation
    from "ati" to "vesa". Voila!
