  1. AIX 5.2 ML 4 on new P550

    I'm trying to install AIX 5.2 ML4 (5765-E62 11/2004) on a new P550.

    Whenever I boot from the install CD's to begin clean installation of
    the OS, I'm met with a troubling message:

    Error Warning
    There are no disks available on this system.
    To reboot the system, press reset.
    >>> 1 Continue with Install

    However when I boot the system with the Standalone Diagnostics V.
    5.3.0.50 CD and inspect the internal disk drives I see:

    * sisioa1 P1 PCI-X Dual Channel U320 SCSI
    RAID Adapter
    scsi2 P1-T14 Ultra320 SCSI RAID Adapter
    Physical bus
    * hdisk2 P1-T14-L5-L0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive
    (73400 MB)
    * hdisk3 P1-T14-L8-L0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive
    (73400 MB)
    * sisioa0 P1-C3 PCI-XDDR Dual Channel U320 SCSI
    RAID Adapter
    scsi0 P1-C3-T1 Ultra320 SCSI RAID Adapter
    Physical bus
    scsi1 P1-C3-T2 Ultra320 SCSI RAID Adapter
    Physical bus
    * hdisk0 P1-C3-T2-L5-L0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive
    (73400 MB)
    * hdisk1 P1-C3-T2-L8-L0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive
    (73400 MB)

    Device Specific.(Z3)........07122
    Device Specific.(Z4)........0001
    Device Specific.(Z5)........22

    Which means I do Indeed have drives in the system, and it should be
    able to see them. What do I need to do to get my 5.2 install to work?

    1.) I don't have a NIM server set up, I'm doing straight-from-cd
    installs
    2.) Do I just build a ISO9660 CD with TL-08 updates and if so... How
    do I force the installation proceedure to update?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

    How are the SCSI cables attached on the back of the system?
    The would be the first thing I check.
    Hope that helps.

    There are no SCSI cables. the disks are completely internal.

    Looks like the version of Aix you are installing may not recognize
    the raid controller and subsquently the disks but the standalone
    diagnostics being newer does.

    .... Just a guess.

    I had ascertained that myself as well. My problem is that I don't know
    what I need to do in order to force this 5.2 install to recognize the
    raid controller/hard disks. I know Linux has a feature that you can
    add additional drivers for devices not detected during the device-
    probe portion of installation. I've tried to access a similar
    facility within the install of AIX 5.2, but to no avail.

    I have the .bff package : devices.pci.14106402.rte.5.2.0.0.bff,
    (IY66298: PCI-X QUAD CHANNEL U320 SCSI RAID ADAPTER SUPPORT) but this
    naming convention is too large to be a valid 8.3 dos format name. I
    have a USB attached floppy drive and have even tried to rename the
    file to simply 14106402.bff (8.3 format) and I have verified that the
    disk is being read when I select the option: [ 66 Devices not known
    to Base Operating System Installation ]

    dd devices.pci.14106402.rte.5.2.0.0.bff to floppy and if it is looking
    to the floppy fot the package it should extract from there.

    ....

    You like to read
    http://publib16.boulder.ibm.com/pser...w4_install.htm

    and search for Diskette
    Might easier just to get from IBM the latest AIX 5.2 installation
    media or use NIMOL

    It looks like the only way around the problem was to create a mksysb
    image of a 5.2 system upgraded to TL-08. It appears to be the minimum
    supported version of 5.2. It doesn't truly resolve the question, but
    it does work. I feel bad for anybody trying to do this!

    Thanks to everybody for their comments and suggestions!
