*bruhaha* You're not serious, are you? $400+ for a machine that
soon won't run current AIX releases and can be picked up at ePay
for less than 1/4th? I'm already sorry for the future owners ...

    Regards,

    Frank

Frank, you are really sadly mistaken. Please check out your information
before posting. The B50 runs latest and greates tfrom IBM. AIX 5.3 is
running very nicely. You will not get this machine off ebay for this price
especially with 1GB ram. Perfect test machine for learning AIX 4.3 through
to latest and future. hey, plus I throw in CDs (whatever you like) and an
hour of education from an certified AIX expert. That alone is worht the
    price.

Please don't post comments unless you know what your talking about. Thanks

You're right, that should've read "won't run anything beyond current
    AIX releases". My bad, sorry!

In fact i do know what i'm talking about. Almost two years ago i
purchased a B50, 1GB RAM, 2x 4.5GB Disk and additional NIC for my-
self. It was a exactly 101,- (including shipping and taxes) on
ePay. So not too far away form 1/4th, isn't it?

    Regards,

    Frank

Thats great Frank, I am glad you found a good deal. There is nothing like

you could eat and an hour from a server specialist included? Dont' answer
cuz I am sick of ur attitude anyways.

Any by the way, do you get dlight out of sabotaging others posts? Seems
thats what your intention is so stop as it is not beoming. Thanks

Frank, it's clear this "expert", who communicates with phrases such as
"u r" and "dlight" and uses a fictitious name and email is worth $300 an
hour but does not know anything of AIX 5.4. At that price, it's clearly
a steal, so I don't know why you are giving him trouble.

Can you - legally - include an AIX 5.3 CD? We'll be getting AIX machines soon at
work and - being in healthcare - the likelihood of being up to 5.4 on day one is
very low (certification delays, etc.). So, 5.3 is good enough for me.

I'm in the Central US. So, it might be a while before I could arrange a road
trip. I'm thinking shipping would be a good chunk of change.

....and yes, $400 Canadian (what's the current exchange rate?) is a bit much to
swallow. Then again, IBM has no "official" AIX hobbyist program (see the OpenVMS
Hobbyist links, below). So that's not really a fair benchmark.

I have small Alphas here that won't run OpenVMS newer than V7.3-2. So, limited
new version support is nothing new for me.

Looks like a 3U or 4U rack mount unit. Is the power 120VAC, 60Hz at least?

2U, and 120VAC (maybe there are other power options, search product
announcements on IBM). This machine is basically a rack mount version
of the popular 7043-140 and 7043-150 "43p" workstations. That is to
say, it is PowerPC, and not POWER like the more advanced
    workstations/servers.

If I were you and wanted a good learning system, I'd purchase a 7044-170
"44p" workstation. This is a POWER3-II system, so it is 64-bit. This
is important to get a handle on things like JFS2, which are 64-bit only.
The AIX 5.4 upgrade path never hurts. These regularly sell for half
of this seller's asking price on eBay, and contrary to his FUD most
things on eBay do work and you are usually well protected as a buyer by
    eBay/PayPal.

I let someone else tackle AIX licensing.

I'll second that. Make sure your applications too are fine with 32bit-
only of the B50. If you need to run a 64bit kernel, you have to get at
    least a Power3 based system.

JFS2 is definitely not 64 bit only.

    True.
One exception though: when you install on a 32bit system you cannot
choose between jfs and jfs2 for rootvg. But jfs2 filesystems can be
    created after installation.

PS: I have also a B50 system from ebay, paid for it less than $150.
