Are you sure that you need that?

On AIX, a *.a file may well be a shared library and can be used for
dynamic linking.

What is the result of "ar -t libphp5.a"?

When I LoadModule and point to the .a, I get:

root@backup:/usr/local/apache> bin/apachectl start

Cannot load module /usr/local/apache/modules/libphp5.a.\n\t0509-103
The module has an invalid magic number.
