Get precompiled binary at...

Save to /usr/local/bin

Move existing ~/.{pan user files} to a safe place

Remove new version of pan.

Start this version of pan (ALT-F2 pan)

If it fails to open check for missing libs with...

ldd /usr/local/bin/pan

Install any missing libs (which I doubt there will be).

If it still fails (which I doubt), delete /usr/local/bin/pan, move saved
use pan config files back to ~/, and reinstall new version.
