Have a look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_cable and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable, and check the
pinouts. You'll notice that there is only one pinout given for the
straight cable, ie, you cannot tell one end from another by looking at
the wire colors (easy to do this the pug in transparent plastic), while
the crossover has a different pinout at each end.
